A groove cut into the hole of a shaft with a convex part to match the shape of the convex part. This type of connection is called a spline fit, and is used to firmly connect gears and other parts to shafts. It is possible to transmit a larger rotational force than with a key. In addition, since the two can slide along the shaft, it is widely used in automobiles and machine tools. There are square splines and involute splines depending on the cross-sectional shape of the teeth.

凸部をもつ軸と連結するもう一方の軸の穴に，凸部の形状に合わせて削り込まれた溝のこと。このような結合方式をスプラインはめ合いといい，歯車などと軸との強固な結合に用いられる。キーの場合より大きな回転力の伝達が可能。また両者を軸に沿ってすべらすことができるので，自動車や工作機械などに広く使われる。歯の断面形状により角形スプラインとインボリュートスプラインがある。
