...The understanding at the time was that the core of ukiyo-zoshi erotic works dealing with men's and women's love was the same, but also included works such as Yujo Hyouban-ki and Yaro Hyouban-ki, which had similar themes and expressions, as well as books that imparted practical knowledge and techniques related to men's and women's love, and erotic books. In addition to Saikaku, authors of ukiyo-zoshi included Nishimura Ichiroemon, Yasui Jibun, and Unpuushi Rinko. In addition to novels, there were ukiyo-e artist Yoshida Hanbei's "Koshoku Kinmou Zui," which introduces various erotic customs and contains sexual knowledge, Kowaku Shoshi's "Danshoku Jusun Kagami," a guide to men's love, and Nishimura's "Koshoku Chuno Doku," a book imparting sexual knowledge, and Yamanoyatsu's "Koshoku Bed Discussion." It seems that from the 1720s onwards, after ukiyo-zoshi had established its format as a novel, erotic books came to be understood as mainly pornographic books.

…His pen name was Yamanoyatsu. He wrote Love in the Water Mirror (1682) and The Elegant Saga Maple Leaves (1683). His published works include the anonymous The Amorous Records of Various Provinces (c. 1684-87) and Unpuushi Rinko's Amorous Hair (c. 1692-96). As a bookseller, he was sensitive to the trends of the times, and although his works still retained the feel of kana-style stories, he was considerate of current events, and later published erotic books during the period when erotic books were popular. …
