Dewa Sanzan - Dewa Sanzan

Japanese: 出羽三山 - でわさんざん
Dewa Sanzan - Dewa Sanzan
The three mountains in central Yamagata Prefecture are Mt. Gassan (1,984m), Mt. Yudono (1,500m), and Mt. Haguro (414m). Since the Middle Ages, all three mountains have been the subject of mountain worship and have been training grounds for mountain ascetics. Mt. Gassan has Gassan Shrine at its summit, and there are many lodgings at Toge. Around Midagahara, about 130 species of alpine plants, including black lilies and snowdrops, bloom in abundance. It is a volcano with a large snowy field near the summit. Summer mountain skiing here is famous. Mt. Yudono is part of the southwestern slope of Mt. Gassan, and enshrines Yudonosan Shrine as the god of agriculture, but there is no shrine building, as the hot springs that bubble up from the middle of Mt. Ubagatake (1,670m) are regarded as the object of worship. Mt. Haguro is a series of hills to the north of the Gassan Omotesando approach to Mt. Gassan. At the summit are Dewa (Haguro) Shrine and the Sanzan Gasaiden, as well as a history museum displaying materials related to the Dewa Sanzan mountains. The five-story pagoda on the mountain is a national treasure, the Golden Hall is an important cultural property, and the cedar trees along the approach are designated as special natural monuments. The Dewa Sanzan mountains belong to Bandai-Asahi National Park.
