[Died] Xianqing 4 (659). 7. Qianzhou, China. A senior official in the early Tang Dynasty. Born into a noble family of Xianbei descent, his sister was Empress Wende of Emperor Taizong of Tang. When Emperor Taizong was in fierce conflict with his elder brother, Crown Prince Jiancheng, during his reign as King of Qin, he encouraged Emperor Taizong to make a decision, eventually carrying out the Xuanwu Gate Coup (→ Xuanwu Gate Incident), and became Emperor Taizong's hero. In Emperor Taizong's later years, when the selection of a successor was difficult, he worked to support Li Zhi (→ Gaozong), and after Emperor Gaozong ascended to the throne, he played an important role as a guardian. He supervised the compilation of the Tang Dynasty's national history, annals, ceremonies, materia medica, commentaries on laws, etc. He was disliked by the rise of Empress Wu (→ Empress Wu Zetian) and exiled to Qianzhou, where he died.

中国,唐初の重臣。鮮卑系貴族の名門出身で,妹は唐の太宗の文徳皇后。太宗が秦王時代に兄皇太子建成と激しく対立した際,その決断を促し,ついに玄武門のクーデターを決行 (→玄武門の変 ) ,太宗の元勲となった。太宗の晩年,後継者の選定が難航したときも李治 (→高宗) 擁立に働き,高宗即位後は後見役として重きをなした。唐の国史,実録や儀礼,本草,律疏などの編纂を監修。武后 (→則天武后 ) の台頭により忌まれて黔 (けん) 州に流され,そこで死没。
