Dewa Mountains - Dewasanchi

Japanese: 出羽山地 - でわさんち
Dewa Mountains - Dewasanchi
A hilly mountain range stretching from southwest Aomori Prefecture to Akita Prefecture and Yamagata Prefecture. The mountain range was formed by uplift at the end of the Neogene Period, and has an average elevation of about 500m. The geology is mainly composed of Neogene layers from the Miocene onwards, based on granite. It is divided by the Yoneshiro River, Omono River, Koyoshi River, etc., and is divided into the Shirakami Mountains, Taihei Mountains, Sasamori Hills, and Chodake Mountains from the north. The Chokai volcanic belt runs parallel to this mountain range, and volcanoes such as Mt. Iwaki and Mt. Chokai are found within it. This area is designated as Chokai Quasi-National Park. The mountain range is covered with deep snow due to the winter seasonal winds blowing in from the Sea of Japan. The annual precipitation is relatively high at about 1800mm, and beautiful forests of Japanese cypress and cedar grow everywhere, making it an abundant forest resource. Mines have been developed here since ancient times, and the Tara, Oppu, and Hanaoka mines were once very prosperous, but no mining is currently taking place here. Livestock farming is carried out on a large scale, making use of the mountain slopes.
