Nikolai Nikolaevich Murav'yov‐Amurskii

Russian politician, infantry general, and count. After graduating from the Central Military Academy, he served in the war against Turkey (1828-29) and in the suppression of the November Uprising in Poland (1831). He served as governor of Tula Governorate in 1846, and as governor of Irkutsk Governorate and Yenisei Governorate and Governor-General of Eastern Siberia from 1847 to 1861. Politically, he was a liberal who advocated the emancipation of serfs, but at the same time he promoted Russian expansion into the Far East and worked hard to promote colonization and trade in Eastern Siberia. He assisted General Nevelskoy in surveying the mouth of the Amur River and in building Muravyov Outpost in Sakhalin, and in 1854-55 he personally explored and surveyed the Amur River.

ロシアの政治家，歩兵大将，伯爵。中央幼年学校卒業後トルコとの戦争(1828‐29)やポーランドの十一月蜂起の鎮圧(1831)に従軍した。1846年トゥーラ県知事，47‐61年イルクーツク県およびエニセイ県知事兼東シベリア総督をつとめた。政治的には農奴解放を主張する自由主義的意見の持主であったが，同時にロシアの極東進出をはかり，東シベリアにおける拓殖と通商の促進に力を尽くした。ネベリスコイ将軍指揮下のアムール河口の調査やサハリンのムラビヨフ哨所建設に援助を与えるとともに，54‐55年にはみずからアムール川の探検と調査を行った。
