A city in northeastern Indiana, USA. Population 183,000 (1994). Located on the Maumee River, it is the center of the agricultural and dairy industry. It is a key transportation hub, and is home to a variety of industries as well as higher education institutions. In the late 17th century, the French built a fur trading post here, which was once home to the Miami Indians. In the 18th century, there were repeated battles between the Miami Indians led by Pontiac and the whites, but in 1794, General Wayne repelled the Indians and built a fort, which was called Fort Wayne.
