A wing whose sweepback angle can be changed during flight. Wings with a small aspect ratio provide excellent flight performance at transonic and supersonic speeds, but performance deteriorates at subsonic speeds. For this reason, wings whose sweepback angle can be changed to provide an advantage over a wide range of speeds were developed. They are mainly used in supersonic military aircraft such as fighters, attack aircraft, and bombers. The term "variable wing" has a broader meaning, and refers to wings whose geometric shape can be changed in various aspects, including not only the sweepback angle but also the wing area, camber, and angle of attack.

後退角を飛行中に変えることのできる翼。遷音速飛行や超音速飛行ではアスペクト比の小さい翼が優れた飛行性能を発揮するが，亜音速飛行では性能が悪くなる。そのため広い速度範囲のどこでも有利になるよう後退角を変えることができる翼が開発された。おもに戦闘機，攻撃機，爆撃機など超音速の軍用機に採用されている。なお「可変翼」といえば意味が広くなり，後退角ばかりでなく，翼面積，キャンバ，取付角など，さまざまな部分について幾何学的形状を変えられる翼をいう。
