This article provides an overview of modern Japanese art from the Meiji period to the early Showa period. However, its beginnings had already begun in the late Edo period, and without the foundation of highly refined Edo period art, the new developments that followed the Meiji Restoration would not have been possible. From this perspective, we will touch on Edo art as its prehistory, then look at the state of Meiji art that was shaped by its encounter with Western civilization and art, and treat the period from the 1900s onwards as Taisho art, from the acceptance of Impressionism. Please also refer to the entries for "Official Exhibitions" and "Contemporary Art" to understand the trends in modern and contemporary art, and the entry for "Modern Architecture" to understand the trends in architecture in the Meiji and Taisho periods.
