The smallest unit of storage is one that distinguishes between two values and corresponds to one binary digit. This is called a bit, an abbreviation of bi nary digit . In practice, multiple consecutive bits are used together. Using n bits, a maximum of ²ⁿ values can be expressed. For the sake of convenience in computer processing, the value of n is also a power of 2, so values of n such as 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, etc. are commonly used. When n = 8, there are 256 possibilities, which is almost enough to represent Western letters, numbers, and other symbols, so the unit indicated by computer instructions is often 8 bits.

記憶装置の最小単位は二つの値を区別するもので，二進法1桁に対応する。これを，binary digit(二進数)を短縮してビットbitと呼ぶ。実際には連続する複数個のビットをまとめて用いる。nビットを用いると最大2ⁿ通りの値を表現できる。nの値も，2のべきとするのが，計算機の処理上好都合なので，nの値として8，16，32，64，128等が用いられる。n＝8のときは256通りとなり，欧米の文字，数字，その他の記号を表現するのにほぼ十分と言えるので，計算機の命令が指し示す単位を8ビットとするのが大勢である。
