1882‐1975 Irish nationalist politician. Born in New York City, USA, he was raised by his Irish maternal grandmother from the age of three after the death of his father. While working as a mathematics teacher, he joined the Gaelic Association and continued his nationalist movement. In the 1916 Easter Rising, he fought against the British army as a volunteer commander, was defeated and sentenced to death, but was released in 1917 because he was born in America. He played a consistent leading role in the struggle for independence that followed. After the establishment of the Irish Free State, he rejected it for a time, but eventually returned to Parliament and served as Prime Minister from 1932 (1932-48, 1951-54, 1957-59).
