Eamon De Valera

Irish nationalist politician. Born in New York City, USA, he was raised by his Irish maternal grandmother from the age of three after the death of his father. While working as a mathematics teacher, he joined the Gaelic Association and continued his nationalist movement. In the 1916 Easter Rising, he fought against the British army as a volunteer commander, was defeated and sentenced to death, but was released in 1917 because he was born in America. He played a consistent leading role in the struggle for independence that followed. After the establishment of the Irish Free State, he rejected it for a time, but eventually returned to Parliament and served as Prime Minister from 1932 (1932-48, 1951-54, 1957-59).

アイルランドの民族主義的政治家。アメリカのニューヨーク市で生まれ，父の死により3歳のときからアイルランドの母方の祖母のもとで育てられた。数学教師として教壇に立つ一方，ゲーリック協会に加盟し，民族主義運動を続けた。1916年のイースター蜂起では義勇軍指揮官としてイギリス軍と戦い，敗れて死刑を宣告されるが，アメリカ生れのため17年に釈放された。その後の独立闘争でも一貫して指導的役割を果たした。アイルランド自由国成立後，一時期はこれを拒否したが，やがて国会に復帰し，32年から首相(1932‐48,51‐54,57‐59)を務めた。
