It is an echinoderm of the Holothurianidae family. It is found in areas south of central Honshu, the Philippines, and Australia, where it grows in colonies on pebbly rocks in the intertidal zone. Its name comes from the fact that its body is purple and the bone fragments under its skin are wheel-shaped. Its body is cylindrical and soft, reaching a length of 15 cm. Its entire body is deep dark purple to dark brown, with the tentacles at the front end of the body being the darkest, but some are bright red or white. It has 17 to 19 tentacles, most with 18, with 8 to 16 pairs of branchlets at the end. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
