Devāram (English spelling)

Japanese: デーバーラム（英語表記）Devāram

A collection of religious poems by the Shaivite sages Appar (3,130 poems), Sambandar (4,181 poems), and Sundarar (650 poems), who appeared in South India in the 7th and 8th centuries. Also known as Tēvāram. Published around the 10th century. Based on traditional Tamil literary techniques, it is composed of poems that fervently praise the faith of the god Shiva. It was born out of the bhakti movement that spread in South India several centuries after Christ, and was later included in the Shaivite holy book Tirumuṟai (published at the end of the 11th century) by Nambi Andhra Nambi.

7,8世紀に南インドに現れたシバ教の聖者アッパル(3130編)，サンバンダル(4181編)，スンダラル(650編)の宗教詩を一つにまとめたもの。テーバーラムTēvāramとも。10世紀ころ成立。タミルの伝統的な文学技法に基づいて，シバ神への信仰を熱烈にうたい上げた詩から成る。紀元後数世紀以降南インドに広まった帰依信仰運動(バクティ)の中から生まれたもので，のちにナンビ･アーンダール･ナンビによって，シバ派の聖典《ティルムライTirumuṟai》(11世紀末に成立)に収められた。
