Geologist and geographer. Born into a Confucian family in Tanabe, Wakayama Prefecture. After graduating from the Department of Geology at the College of Science, Tokyo Imperial University in 1896 (Meiji 29), he joined the Geological Survey of Japan, where he produced 1:200,000 geological maps of Kochi, Kimoto, Toba, Suzu-misaki, and Wajima. He also traveled to China in 1902 (Meiji 35), inspecting various areas including northern China. In 1908, he became a professor at the College of Letters, Kyoto Imperial University, where he taught geography courses. In 1921 (Taisho 10), he became the head professor of the Department of Geology and Mineralogy, Faculty of Science at the same university. He also organized the Earth Science Society, and published its journal, Chikyu. After retiring from the government in 1930 (Showa 5), he became a member of the Imperial Academy. He wrote many papers and books, including "New Interpretations of Geological Phenomena," which advocated the theory of deep earthquakes, "Studies on the Historical Geography of China," which discussed the historical geography of China, and "Atlas of Japan." His eldest son, Yoshiki Ogawa (1902-1959), his second son, Shigeki Kaizuka, his third son, Hideki Yukawa, and his fourth son, Tamaki Ogawa (1910-1993), are well-known scholars of metallurgy, Oriental history, physics, and Chinese literature, respectively.
