…This was the time when Napoleon was on the rise, and the number of newspapers published was also increasing dramatically, so there was a demand for a high-speed printing press. In 1814, at the request of The Times, Germans Friedrich König (1774-1833) and Andreas Friedrich Bauer (1783-1860) built a cylinder printing press and invented the modern method of printing by moving a flat plate back and forth and applying pressure. Previously, when the manuscripts were ready at midnight, by 6 a.m., two workers per press on 12 presses could barely print 10,000 copies, even if they worked in shifts. However, with König and Bauer's machine, two workers per press could print about 10,000 copies. …
