Suzuki Numa ruins

Japanese: 鱸沼遺跡 - すずきぬまいせき

This site, which dates from the Jomon to Kofun periods, is located on a low hill about 10m high that juts out into the alluvial plain on the west bank of the Abukuma River in Sasunuma, Kakuda City, Miyagi Prefecture. Surveys were carried out in 1969-70, and a large number of Yayoi pottery vessels, including one with a human face, were unearthed. This is characterized by worn-out Jomon and Kō character patterns demarcated by thick sunken lines, and is the oldest Yayoi pottery in the Tohoku region, known as the Oizumi type. Furthermore, a stone knife used for harvesting and carbonized rice were discovered together with the pottery, proving that rice farming was practiced in the southern Tohoku region during this period (early middle Yayoi period).

宮城県角田市鱸沼の阿武隈川西岸，沖積地に突き出た比高10mほどの低丘陵上に立地する縄文時代から古墳時代にかけての遺跡。1969‐70年に調査が行われ，人面付土器をふくむ多数の弥生土器が出土した。これは太い沈線で区画された磨消縄文や工字文を特徴とし，東北地方では最も古い弥生土器で，大泉式とよばれる。しかも，この土器といっしょに収穫具である石庖丁と炭化米が発見されたため，この時期(弥生時代中期初頭)には東北地方南部で稲作農耕が行われていたことが実証された。
