Flower Clock

Flowers of plants bloom at roughly the same time depending on the season and type. Taking advantage of this property, a flower bed is a combination of flowers that open and close at different times. The idea of a flower clock is said to have originated when botanist Linnaeus saw that flowers opened and closed at roughly the same time and thought that they could serve as a substitute for a clock, and planted them on the campus of Uppsala University in Sweden around 1750. The flowering of flowers is greatly influenced by their place of origin, season, weather, and type, making it very difficult to actually use them. Nowadays, flower clocks are decorative, with a mechanical clock installed separately from the flowering time, and plants with beautiful flowers and leaves planted on the part that becomes the dial. The face of the clock is usually tilted at about 15 degrees to make it easy to read. Well-known overseas are those in the Royal Botanic Gardens of Edinburgh in the UK and Geneva in Switzerland, while in Japan there are those in front of Kobe City Hall (1957), the Kanagawa Prefectural Flower Center Ofuna Botanical Gardens (1967), as well as Komazawa Olympic Park in Tokyo, in front of Sapporo Civic Hall (1958), Otofuke Town in Hokkaido, and Matsubara Park in Toi Port, Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture (1991).
