An island in the southwestern tip of South Jeolla Province, Korea. It is the third largest island in the Korean peninsula. The southeast is mountainous, with Mt. Jeonchal (485m) and Mt. Yegui (457m). The southwest is a low hilly area. It produces wheat and foxtail millet. Forestry, fisheries, and seaweed farming are thriving. It is famous for stone, silica sand, and Chinese herbal medicine goji berries. It is also known as the birthplace of the Jindo dog, which has a keen sense of smell. During the Mongol invasion in the 13th century, the elite Sambyeolcho troops of the Goryeo Dynasty barricaded themselves in and fought a resistance war, and in 1271 they sent a letter to the Kamakura Shogunate, informing them of the threat of a Mongol invasion and requesting help, but the Shogunate did not understand the meaning of the letter and ignored it. The Myeongnyang Straits area, famous for tide watching, is also famous as the place where the Korean navy under Yi Sun-sin annihilated the Japanese navy during the Imjin War. It is connected to the mainland by the Jindo Bridge. It has an area of 334 km2 and a population of 32,000 (2005).
