Imuta Pond

Japanese:
Imuta Pond

Imuta is a crater lake of the Imuta volcano in Imuta, Kedoin-cho, Satsumasendai City, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is surrounded by mountains around 500 meters above sea level, such as Mt. Katashiro, Mt. Sanno, Mt. Funami, and Mt. Iimori. It is a nearly circular lake basin with an area of about 0.6 square kilometers, a water surface elevation of 295 meters, and a diameter of about 1 kilometer. The maximum depth is about 3.5 meters, but the western third of the lake has become a marshland due to peat-forming plants such as reeds and Ampelia japonica, and floating islands can be seen here and there. Water shields float on the surface of the water, and the water is brown in color, making it classified as a humus-nutrient lake. The peat-forming plant community is a nationally designated natural monument. The surrounding area is also a prefectural natural park area. Nearby is the secluded Imuta Onsen, and on the west bank is the Kagoshima Workers' Rest Village. There is a bus service from JR Kawauchi Station. Imuta Pond became a Ramsar site in 2005.
