1581‐1643 French theologian. Born Jean Duvergier de Hauranne, he was the abbot of Saint-Ciran. During his student days he became friends with Jansen and devoted himself to the study of the Bible and the Church Fathers. In 1620 he met P. de Bérulle, the founder of the Oratory Society, and under his influence he became keenly aware of the need for church reform. In 1635 he took over the leadership of the Port-Royal convent and became deeply involved in the Port-Royal movement. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
