A folded mountain range in central Scotland, UK. Its name comes from the name of a Pictish tribe who lived in the area during the Roman period, and it is also known simply as the Grampians. The highest mountain in the UK, Ben Nevis (1,343m), is located in the northwest. Together with the Northwestern Highlands, it forms part of the Highlands, but the two are separated by the Glen More Rift Valley, and the central lowlands are clearly separated by a fault scarp to the south. Formed by the Caledonian orogeny, it is mainly composed of crystalline schist, gneiss, and granite, and has a northeast-southwest strike.
