China's first novelist and translator in the late Qing Dynasty. Born in Changshu, Jiangsu Province. Style name: Meng Pu. In 1891, Guangxu 17, he passed the exam to become a juinren (a Chinese official), and was appointed to a government position. He also studied French at the Tongwenguan (a Chinese literary school) and aimed to become a diplomat, but failed. After the Bohui Coup, he resigned from his post and founded the magazine Shosetsurin (Chinese Novel Lin) in Shanghai, and wrote political novels himself. His representative work, Gekaika (The Flowers of the Sea) (1905-07, revised 27th), uses politicians, military men, writers, and prostitutes from the late Qing Dynasty as models to highlight the social conditions of the time. His other works include the novel Man of Lu, as well as translations and essays of French literature.

中国，清末民国初の小説家，翻訳家。江蘇省常熟の人。字，孟樸。光緒 17 (1891) 年挙人に合格，官職につく一方，同文館でフランス語を学び外交官を志したが失敗。戊戌の政変後辞職して，上海で雑誌『小説林』を創刊，みずからも政治小説を書いた。代表作『げっ海花 (げっかいか) 』 (1905～07，27改訂) は，清末の政治家，軍人，文学者，妓女などをモデルに当時の社会相を浮彫りにしたもの。ほかに小説『魯男子』，またフランス文学の翻訳や随筆がある。
