[Birth] Douji 11 (1872) [Died] 1935 China's first novelist and translator in the late Qing Dynasty. Born in Changshu, Jiangsu Province. Style name: Meng Pu. In 1891, Guangxu 17, he passed the exam to become a juinren (a Chinese official), and was appointed to a government position. He also studied French at the Tongwenguan (a Chinese literary school) and aimed to become a diplomat, but failed. After the Bohui Coup, he resigned from his post and founded the magazine Shosetsurin (Chinese Novel Lin) in Shanghai, and wrote political novels himself. His representative work, Gekaika (The Flowers of the Sea) (1905-07, revised 27th), uses politicians, military men, writers, and prostitutes from the late Qing Dynasty as models to highlight the social conditions of the time. His other works include the novel Man of Lu, as well as translations and essays of French literature.
