An act of cleansing the body and mind of sins and impurities with water. It is also called mizugori or korikaki. It is a type of misogi (purification ritual) in which one bathes in water to purify the body and mind before visiting a god or praying. It is often performed at a waterfall or river. It has been practiced since ancient times by ascetics and mountain ascetics, including those who perform ablutions on pilgrimages to Kumano, the three Kumano shrines in Wakayama Prefecture. Climbing mountains in mountain worship was originally only for men, but after World War II, women were allowed to climb Mt. Ishizuchi in Ehime Prefecture and other places, and women began to perform ablutions as well. When taking the ablution, one is either naked or wearing a white robe. The origin of ablution is thought to be in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki mythology, in which Izanagi-no-Mikoto performed a purification ritual to remove impurities.
