Cindua Mato (English spelling)

Japanese: チンドゥア･マト（英語表記）Cindua Mato

A representative kaba of the Minangkabau people of Sumatra, Indonesia. Kaba is a type of oral storytelling found in the Malay cultural sphere, originally in verse form and told as a song. Through the narration of a certain event, kaba often shows how people should be and what their code of conduct should be according to adat (customary law). "Cindua Mat" can be considered an epic poem, and although the date of its creation is unknown, it tells the legend surrounding the origins of the Minangkabau royal family. The main characters are Queen Bundu Kanduaan (meaning "True Mother"), her son Dan Tuanku, and Chindua Mat (the son of the queen's lady-in-waiting). While describing the adventures of the protagonist, it preaches the ideal form of kingship and the state of the Minangkabau world.

インドネシア，スマトラ島のミナンカバウ族の代表的カバ。カバkabaはマレー文化圏に見られる口承物語の一種で，本来は韻文形式をとり，歌うようにして語られる。カバはあるできごとの叙述を通じて，アダット(慣習法)にのっとった人間のあるべき姿や行動規範を示すことが多い。《チンドゥア･マト》は叙事詩ともいえるもので，成立年代は不明であるが，ミナンカバウ王家の起源にまつわる伝説を物語る。主要登場人物は，女王ブンド･カンドゥアン(〈真の母〉の意味)，その息子ダン･トゥアンク，そしてチンドゥア･マト(女王の女官の息子)で，主人公の冒険を描きつつ，王権の理想の姿やミナンカバウ世界のあり方を説く。
