Kunu Country

Also called "Kuna no Kuni." One of the primitive tribal nations that appears in the Gishiwajinden. Located south of Yamataikoku, it did not belong to Yamataikoku, and had a male as king. A country of fishermen with short hair and painted bodies. There are various theories about its origin, from the ancient theory by Motoori Norinaga that it was Konogo, Kazami County, Iyo, to the Keno Country theory by Miyake Yonekichi, the Kumano theory by Kasai Shinya, and the Kumaso theory by Kyushu. 「くなのくに」ともいう。『魏志倭人伝』にみえる原始的部族国家の一つ。邪馬台国の南にあって，邪馬台国には所属せず，男子を王とする。断髪，文身の漁業民の国。古くは本居宣長の伊予風見郡河野郷説から，三宅米吉の毛野国説，笠井新也の熊野説，九州の熊襲 (くまそ) 説などがある。
