Inter-symbolic translation

...Translations that are done orally are called interpretations. Russian linguist R. Jakobson divided translation into three types: (1) intralingual translation (rephrases within the same language), (2) interlingual translation (transferring from one natural language to another), and (3) inter-semiotic translation (replacing a natural language with another symbolic system). This idea breaks the conventional wisdom that reduces translation to interlingual translation (2), and shows that translation is related to the essence of language. Based on this concept of translation, a definition of meaning has also been derived, which has been adopted not only in linguistics but also in cultural semiotics, contributing to its development.
