When iron is placed in a solution containing copper ions, such as a copper sulfate solution, the iron dissolves and copper precipitates. Using this principle, copper can be obtained by directing water from copper mines or water that has been sprayed on poor ore at mining sites to a trough or tank and then adding scrap iron. Because it contains a lot of impurities, it is combined with ore concentrate and used as a charging material for blast furnaces and converters.
