A haiku poet of the mid-Edo period. His aliases were Goshoan and Tokuan. He entered the priesthood at a young age, and became the 11th head priest of the Jodo sect Kihakuin temple following the sudden death of the head priest. He first studied haiku under the urban Mochizuki Soya, but became associated with the Mino school of haiku and sensed the true style of Matsuo Basho. He subsequently became a central figure in the Kyoto haiku world, and came to be known as the "master of the Hanaraku Basho school" (Hanaraku Nikki), but at the same time he criticized the internal decadence of the local Hanaraku Basho schools. He established Goshoan in Okazaki, east of Kyoto, and played an active role as a central figure in the Basho revival movement, and also guided other haiku poets. Among his achievements are his contributions to the preservation of Gichu-ji temple (Basho's grave) and the memorial service, and his publication of the Shigure-kai magazine is noteworthy. 江戸中期の俳人。別号,五升庵,泊庵。幼くして僧籍に入り,住職の急逝に従って浄土宗帰白院の11世住職となる。俳諧においては最初都市系の望月宋屋に師事するが,美濃派の俳諧に連なり,松尾芭蕉の正風体を感得。以後京都俳壇の中心的存在となり,「花洛蕉門棟梁」(『華洛日記』)と称されるに至るが,一方では地方蕉門の内部退廃も批判した。洛東岡崎に五升庵を結び,芭蕉復興運動の中心的存在として活躍し,諸俳人も指導した。その事蹟のうち,義仲寺(芭蕉墓所)の護持と追遠行事に功があり,『しぐれ会』の刊行は注目される。さらには,伝記を解明した『芭蕉翁絵詞伝』,そして『芭蕉翁文集』などを含む3部作などは,芭蕉研究において貴重。<参考文献>田中道雄『蝶夢の俳壇登場をめぐる諸問題』(『語文研究』21・28・30・33号),大内初夫監修『時雨会集成』
