A propeller for an airplane or ship whose pitch can be freely changed while the aircraft is in flight. In airplanes, the pitch is increased at high speeds and decreased at low speeds such as during takeoff or ascent to increase the efficiency of the propeller. In addition to constant-speed propellers, which use a governor to automatically change the pitch according to flight conditions while keeping the propeller speed constant, feathering propellers, which can orient the propeller blades in the direction of the aircraft's movement to minimize propeller resistance when the engine is stopped, and reversible pitch propellers, which can act as brakes when landing, are also widely used. Controllable pitch propellers, which keep the engine speed constant and can freely change the propeller pitch from forward to reverse, are also in practical use on ships.
