This pottery was produced mainly in Arezzo in central Italy between about 30 BC and about 40 AD. It is a terracotta made from highly refined clay, but because it is thin and hard, it is presumed that the firing temperature was high for terracotta. The surface of the vessel is covered with a glossy reddish-brown slip (diluted cream-like clay) and has a smoothness as if it were glazed. This pottery is roughly divided into three groups: (1) a group with relief decoration formed using a matrix with decorative motifs engraved on it, (2) a group in which decorative motifs made using a matrix were attached after the vessel was cast on the potter's wheel, and (3) a group without decoration.
