1892‐1942 Korean poet and novelist. His pen name was Boseok. He was born in Jincheon, North Chungcheong Province. He went to Japan and studied philosophy at Toyo University. He returned to Korea in 1923 and worked as a journalist before moving to the Soviet Union in 1928, where he worked mainly as a teacher. In 1936 he worked as a managing director for the Far East region of the Union of Soviet Writers in Khabarovsk, and spent the rest of his life in the Soviet Union. During this time, he participated in the founding of the KUP (Korean Proletarian Arts League) in 1925. His representative work, Nakdong River (1927), which depicts the struggle and death of the protagonist whose homeland has been taken from him, is a short story filled with revolutionary romanticism, and can be said to be a masterpiece in the history of Korean proletarian literature.
