Japanese: 芝山細工 - しばやまざいく
Shibayama crafts - Shibayamazaiku

A type of lacquerware decoration technique. Also known as Shibayama inlay or Shibayama carving. This technique was invented by Onogi Senzo (later renamed Shibayama Senzo) of Shimousa (Chiba Prefecture) during the An'ei era (1772-1781) in the late Edo period, in which pieces of tusk, horn, shell, and shell were dyed and combined with flower and bird motifs, and inlaid into the base plate of a lacquered folding screen or a picture frame. During the Meiji period, it was mainly produced in Yokohama and exported to Europe and the United States.
