An evergreen perennial plant of the Fittonia genus in the Acanthaceae family. Two species are found in the moist forests of the Andes Mountains, one of which, Fittonia verschaffeltii, is sold as an ornamental plant. Its Japanese name is Beniamimegusa. The stems are four-sided and densely covered with fine hairs. They root at the internodes and spread out by creeping. The oval leaves are opposite each other and 6-10 cm long. The dark green ground color has pink-pink veins that run in a net pattern. The plant is about 15 cm tall. The variety, F.verschaffeltii var. argyroneura , is smaller and well-branched, with leaves that have a silvery-white net pattern on a dark green ground. F.verschaffeltii var. argyroneura `Compacta' is a dwarf variety of F.verschaffeltii, with leaves 3-4cm long. Keep in bright partial shade. Prefers high temperature and humidity, and needs 15℃ or higher for wintering. Propagate by cuttings.
