Cheap government

Japanese: チープ･ガバメント（英語表記）cheap government

It is also called little government, meaning a cheap government. It refers to a government that keeps the tax burden on the people low and does not interfere in economic activity. The state during the laissez-faire period is characterized as a night watchman state in terms of the government's sphere of activity, but in terms of government finances, it took the form of a cheap government that believed that the smallest government was the best government. This was because the bourgeoisie, which had the strongest political voice during the laissez-faire period, wanted to pursue wealth through free economic activity, and demanded that the government's sphere of activity be as narrow as possible and that the tax burden be as low as possible.

安上りの政府の意味で，リトル･ガバメント(小さな政府)とも呼ばれる。国民の租税負担を低く抑えて，経済活動に干渉しない政府のありかたをいう。自由放任主義の時期における国家は，政府の活動領域に関しては夜警国家として特徴づけられるが，政府の財政面に関しては〈最小の政府こそ最良の政府〉であるとするチープ･ガバメントの形をとった。これは，自由放任主義の時期に最も強い政治的発言権をもっていたブルジョアジーが，自由な経済活動によって富を追求することを望み，政府の活動領域をできるだけ狭くして，租税負担もできるだけ低くすることを要求したためである。
