[raw]? [Died] November 29, 1656 A blind musician in the early Edo period. Founder of the Maeda school of Heikyoku. According to one theory, he died in 1685. His hometown name was Kuichi. His teacher is said to have been Takayama Kengyo Tanichi (or Tanichi), a disciple of Matsumoto Kengyo Kyo, but the date of his appointment as a Kengyo is unknown. He was favored by the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, and the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, and succeeded Hatano Kengyo, the first Edo master, to become the second Edo master. He was also friends with Oda Urakusai, the younger brother of Oda Nobunaga and known as a tea master. The Maeda school produced such masters as Yamashita Kengyo, Yoshizawa Kengyo, and Kiriyama Kengyo, and its influence surpassed that of the Hatano school. The Heikyoku schools of Nagoya and Tsugaru, which are still being passed down to a limited extent today, are also descended from the Maeda school.
