The term refers to an Englishman born in Ireland, and came into common use around the 18th century during the Glorious Revolution. They were the descendants of immigrants from the Tudor period onwards, belonged to the Church of England, and were the central force in Irish society, but were always under the rule of Englishmen born in the homeland. Under the Glorious Revolution, many famous thinkers, such as W. Molyneux, philosopher G. Berkeley, and J. Swift, demanded equal rights as British citizens and that the Irish Parliament be given equal powers to the Parliament of the colonial power of Great Britain.
