…He studied at the universities of Berlin, Leipzig, Heidelberg, and Marburg, and received his doctorate in 1899. He started out as a member of the Neo-Kantian school (Marburg School) of H. Cohen and Natorp, and completed his early representative work, the three-volume Problems of Cognition in Modern Philosophy and Science, between 1906 and 1920. The interruption of this work due to World War I led to the creation of his own research into the history of the German mind, Freedom and Form (1916), and in 1919 after the war he was appointed full professor at the newly established Department of Philosophy at the University of Hamburg. …
