Cho Yŏn-hyŏn (English spelling)
1920‐81
Korean literary critic. His pen name was Seok Jae. He was born in Haman, South Gyeongsang Province. He graduated from the Literature Department of Hyehwa College and started out as a poet, but after liberation he became actively involved in literary criticism. He was editor of the magazine "Contemporary Literature" for 27 years from its first issue in 1955, and introduced over 300 new writers to the world, making him one of the central figures in the literary world. He became a professor at Dongguk University in 1960. He died in Tokyo in the winter of 1981. Along with Kim Dong-ri, he defended "pure literature," which is why "Contemporary Literature" has maintained its longevity. His main work, "History of Korean Contemporary Literature" (1961), is distinctive as a modern literary history with an emphasis on author studies.
