Inuzakura - Inuzakura

Japanese: イヌザクラ - いぬざくら
Inuzakura - Inuzakura

A deciduous tree of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). It grows to a height of 10-18 meters. The bark is dark gray, and the leaves are alternate, obovate-elliptical, 6-10 cm long, sharply pointed at the tip, wedge-shaped at the base, and finely serrated at the edge. After the leaves appear in April-May, many small white 5-petaled flowers, about 7 mm in diameter, bloom in a 5-10 cm long raceme. The axis of the inflorescence is leafless. The fruit is oval with a slightly pointed tip, ripens yellow-red to black-purple around July, and the withered stamens and calyx remain at the base of the fruit. It grows wild in the mountains and fields of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and is also distributed in Jeju Island in the south of the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, and China. It is used for firewood, charcoal, and woodblocks. Because the bark and twigs have a foul odor, it is called Kusozakura (Kusozakura) or Heppirizakura (Heppirizakura).
