Arsenous acid (arsenic acid)

Arsenous acid (arsenic acid)
An acid thought to exist when diarsenic trioxide As 2 O 3 is dissolved in water. It is represented by the chemical formula H 3 AsO 3 , HAsO 2 , etc., but is not obtained in a free state. Although it is a weak acid, it is amphoteric and also acts as a base. Acid dissociation constant K a = 6 × 10 -6 (HAsO 2 ⇄H + +AsO 2 - ), base dissociation constant K b = 10 -14 (AsO(OH)⇄AsO + +OH - ). It is stable in neutral and slightly acidic aqueous solutions, but in alkaline aqueous solutions it is easily oxidized by air to become arsenic acid.
