Aramaki (new volume) - Aramaki

Japanese:
Aramaki (new volume) - Aramaki
A salted salmon product, lightly salted ones are now called shinmaki, but originally it referred to fish or meat salted and wrapped in straw for ease of storage and transportation. In the Wamyōshō, it is written as 苞苴 and read as aramaki, referring to wrapped fish meat. In addition to the sea bream aramaki that appears in the Uji Shūi Monogatari and other works, old documents mention eels, conger eels, octopuses, deer, whales, pheasants and other creatures, but no salmon aramaki has been found.
