Torres Strait

The strait between Cape York and New Guinea, at the northern tip of Australia. It is about 150 km wide at its narrowest point, but navigation is difficult due to the many Torres Strait Islands (Australian territory), coral reefs, and shallow waters. The Torres Strait Islanders are Melanesian people, and since the 1980s have launched a movement demanding indigenous rights.
