Qāsim Amin

1865‐1908
Egyptian thinker and writer. Born into the ruling class of Circassian descent under the Muhammad Ali dynasty. He was one of the people who inherited the Islamic reform ideas of Muhammad Abduh and others from a liberal and enlightened position, and is particularly known as a women's liberation advocate who attempted to combine Islamic ethics with Western liberal thought in his works On the Emancipation of Women (1899) and The New Woman (1901). His position that the ideal civilization was scientific expressed a sense of crisis in the Islamic world, which believed that historical traditions had led to the decadence of Islam itself and brought about the invasion of the West.

エジプトの思想家，作家。出身は，ムハンマド･アリー朝下のチェルケス系支配層。ムハンマド･アブドゥフらのイスラム改革思想を〈自由主義的開明派〉の立場で継承した一人で，とくに《婦人解放論》(1899)，《新婦人》(1901)によりイスラム倫理と西欧自由主義思想とを結合させようとした女性解放論者として有名。理想的文明は科学的だとするその立場には，歴史的な伝統によりイスラム自体が頽廃し，西欧の侵略がもたらされたとする，イスラム世界の危機意識が表明されていた。
