1865‐1908 Egyptian thinker and writer. Born into the ruling class of Circassian descent under the Muhammad Ali dynasty. He was one of the people who inherited the Islamic reform ideas of Muhammad Abduh and others from a liberal and enlightened position, and is particularly known as a women's liberation advocate who attempted to combine Islamic ethics with Western liberal thought in his works On the Emancipation of Women (1899) and The New Woman (1901). His position that the ideal civilization was scientific expressed a sense of crisis in the Islamic world, which believed that historical traditions had led to the decadence of Islam itself and brought about the invasion of the West.
