Among the artists of the period when the Pre-Raphaelites and Impressionists were influx was Louis Buvelot (1814-1888). During the first cultural upsurge in the 1890s, when cultural nationalism that emphasized the ethos of native Australia rose to prominence, the Heidelberg School, led by Tom Roberts (1856-1931), Frederick McCubbin (1855-1917), Arthur Streeton (1867-1943), David Davies (1862-1939), and Charles Conder (1868-1909), refined the Impressionist style in an Australian style, and it became the mainstream of the art world thereafter. …
