American composer. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1932 for his Cello Sonata. His breakthrough works were his Symphony in One Movement and String Quartet in B minor (both in 1936), which he composed while in Rome. The second movement of the latter was arranged for string ensemble as Adagio for Strings (1937), which was premiered by Toscanini and became Barber's most popular work with its sorrowful melody. Known for his solid style that emphasizes melody, some of his representative works include the Violin Concerto (1939), the ballet music Medea (1946, suite version 1947, based on an original work by Euripides) written for M. Graham's ballet company, the Piano Sonata in E-flat minor (1949), dedicated to Horowitz, and the opera Vanessa (1957, revised in 1964), based on a libretto by his close friend Menotti.
