Gyoja garlic - Gyoja garlic

A perennial plant of the Liliaceae family (APG classification: Amaryllidaceae). The bulbs are lanceolate and covered with a fibrous, mesh-like outer skin. Young plants have only one narrow, oblong leaf, but mature plants have two oblong leaves. The leaf blade is slightly fleshy, dark green, 20-30 cm long, and has a sheath at the base that encases the flower stalk. In May and June, a 40-70 cm flower stalk appears, with an umbel at the tip. The flowers are white and look like green onions, and the large number of flowers make the plant spherical. It grows widely from Hokkaido and central-northern Honshu to mainland China, and the parent species is distributed in Europe. The name means "garlic eaten by ascetics." It has an extremely strong odor, but is edible.

ユリ科（APG分類：ヒガンバナ科）の多年草。鱗茎(りんけい)は披針(ひしん)形で、網目状の繊維からなる外皮に包まれる。幼植物は狭長楕円(だえん)形の葉を1枚のみつけるが、成熟個体は長楕円形の葉を2枚つける。葉身はやや肉質で深緑色、長さ20～30センチメートル、基部は鞘(さや)となって花茎を包む。5、6月に40～70センチメートルの花茎を出し、その先端に散形花序をつける。花は一見ネギに似て白色で、多数の花がつくので全体が球形となる。北海道、本州中北部から中国大陸にかけて広く生育し、母種はヨーロッパに分布する。名は、行者が食べるニンニクの意味。臭気がきわめて強いが食用となる。
