A monastery built in the 6th century on the left bank of the Seine in Paris, near where the Lycée Henry IV is now located. It was dedicated to Geneviève, who was made patron saint of Paris for saving the city from the attack of the Huns led by Attila in 451. The surrounding area is still called "Mont Sainte-Geneviève" after the monastery's name. It fell into decline for a time, but was restored by the chapters of the cathedral in the 11th century, and became an important center of learning from the beginning of the 12th century. Many students gathered here, especially after Abelard taught there, and it produced some of the leading intellectuals of the time, such as John of Salisbury, Arnold of Brescia, and Maenerius.
