A pet breed (illustration) developed from a small chicken introduced to Japan in the early Edo period, many sub-breeds have been developed based on feather color, crown type, and tail type, and all were designated as natural monuments in 1941. The smaller and shorter the legs, the better, and they weigh 600g for males and 450g for females. They have a single crest and feathers in white, black, pale yellow, and some are multi-colored. Examples include the white Katsura chabo with a black tail, the black and white spotted Goishi chabo, the inverted feathered Botan chabo, and the large crested Daruma chabo.

江戸時代の初期に日本に渡来した小型のニワトリを改良した愛玩用の品種（イラスト）で，羽色や冠型･尾型から数多くの内種が成立しており，いずれも1941年に天然記念物に指定されている。小型で脚の短いものほど良いとされ，体重雄600g，雌450g。単冠で，羽色は白色，黒色，浅黄色のほか複色のものもある。白色で尾の黒い桂チャボ，白黒斑の碁石チャボ，羽毛が逆羽のぼたんチャボ，とさかの大冠のだるまチャボなどがある。
