Hanko - Hanko (English spelling)

A port city in southern Finland. Swedish name: Hangö. It is located at the tip of a peninsula that extends from the long moraine Salpauselka into the Gulf of Finland. Population: 10,008 (2001). It developed as a seasonal port because it was free from ice in winter and could be used in many years, but it declined as icebreakers became available and coastal bays could be used almost year-round. The surrounding area is a seaside resort. After the First Soviet-Finnish War, from 1940 to 1944, the Soviet Union leased it as a naval base, but after the Second Soviet-Finnish War, in 1944, the lease was changed to Porkkala, a port city on a similar peninsula to the east, and in 1956 the city was returned to Finland.

フィンランド南部の港湾都市。スウェーデン語名ハンギョーHangö。長大な端堆石(たんたいせき)丘であるサルパウスセルカが、フィンランド湾に沈む所に延びた半島の先端に立地する。人口1万0008（2001）。冬季も凍結せずに利用可能な年が多いために、季節港湾として発展したが、砕氷船が発達して沿岸各湾がほぼ通年利用可能となったため衰退した。周辺は海浜保養地となっている。第一次ソビエト・フィンランド戦争後の1940年から44年まで、ソ連が海軍基地として租借したが、第二次ソビエト・フィンランド戦争後の44年からは、東の同じような半島上の港市ポルッカラPorkkalaに租借地を変更、56年同市はフィンランドに返された。
