A chapel. A house or room where Christian worship is conducted, other than a parish church or cathedral. The word comes from the word cappa, which means a cloak. A part of the cloak of Saint Martin, the patron saint of the military, was preserved as a holy relic, and from the 6th century onwards, Frankish kings added other holy relics to it, carried it on journeys and on the battlefield, and had a dedicated chaplain guard it. This eventually developed into a chapel in the royal courts of the nobles, and the chaplain came to serve as a secretary and advisor to the nobles. Later, the auxiliary churches of monasteries, schools, hospitals and other buildings outside the royal courts also came to be called chapels.
